Can you tell us about your job?
My role as a principal HSSE adviser is focused on people and how we deal with risk. Every day brings a new safety challenge and a large part of my role is to provide people with the tools to deal with situations safely and efficiently; we never stop learning about new ways to keep safe.
What inspired you to become a HSSE professional?
HSSE professionals make a difference to safety and people’s lives; that’s why I do it. I am passionate about making a difference and educating people to live a safer life, so that they do not bring the consequences of injuries home to their families.
I joined Petrofac because I knew my potential and enthusiasm for my work would be recognised. I was fascinated by what Petrofac does and always wanted to be part of a creative organisation, where I could apply my educational background and problem-solving abilities.
What excites you about the work you are doing now?
In my current role I am involved in lots of exciting assignments, meet a variety of people and enjoy the challenge of communicating key safety messages to a wide ranging audience. I learn something new every day and there are always challenges and changes, which keeps it exciting.
Tell us about your journey at Petrofac.
I joined Petrofac as an environmental officer and worked on the team who put our environmental management system in place. We started a waste recycling system in the Sharjah office, which aimed to reduce the company’s environmental footprint. To achieve this, we worked with environment-focused non-government and government organisations in the UAE. We also developed a number of environmental awareness programmes, including our annual Environment Month, which is Petrofac’s month-long programme of internal and community based events promoting sustainability and care for the natural environment. My role then progressed and I got more involved in safety and social performance, which has led to my current focus on HSSE Training.
What is your favourite thing about working for Petrofac?
The diversity and the fact that we are united through our company values. I enjoy the challenge of changing people’s perceptions about safety; getting everyone on the same page is very rewarding.
How has Petrofac supported your ongoing development?
I have learnt so much through working with experienced individuals and teams, training and structured learning including the gaining of my qualifications though the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH). I’ve also gained significant experience working on different projects and from visiting and working on many of our construction sites across the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.
What are your hopes and aspirations for the future?
I enjoy being part of Petrofac and want my career to continue to progress in the organisation; as part of our fantastic HSSE team. I look forward to continuing the positive development of our safety culture.
What advice would you give someone thinking about a career in HSSE at Petrofac?
When you work hard at something you become good at it, and when you become good at doing something you will enjoy it more. Petrofac provides great opportunities for career development, particularly if you are willing to work hard!
